World Dog Surfing Championship Overcomes Financial Issues

Earlier this month, KRON4 reported that the World Dog Surfing Championship was facing financial issues due to increased expenses over the years. However, the Pacifica dog surfing competition was saved by crowdfunding after the organization set up a GoFundMe page.

Crowdfunding saves World Dog Surfing Championship

The World Dog Surfing Championship, held in Pacifica, California, has fans worldwide. The Bay Area residents must have surely heard of the annual event where dogs take to the waves to showcase their surfing skills. However, over the past few years, operating the organization in the Bay Area has increased its expenses. This led to the championship almost being canceled.

After asking for help from the public to cover some of their expenses, the dog surfing competition saw an overwhelming response. While the organizers hoped to raise $10,000 by May 1, people have already donated close to $12,000. Now, the championship is officially scheduled for August 3 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PST.

Notably, permit fees add to the cost of operation of the dog surfing competition, along with additional expenses like dumpsters and porta potties. But now, fans are happy that the championship isn’t getting canceled, as it supports several causes. The organization donates all the entrance fees collected to local animal charities.

Further, dog lovers believe the championship is an excellent opportunity to show people all the great things canines can do. It also highlights the bond between pet parents and their pups, which is key to successfully surfing the waves together.

Santa Cruz resident and past competitor Steve Drottar noted there is a sense of camaraderie amongst the people and their dogs. Everyone helps with the canines in the water, and he believes “it’s a lot of fun,” per ABC7.

Fortunately, the funding issues are mostly resolved and the World Dog Surfing Championship can be held as scheduled. Everybody can enjoy the event as the annual competition is free to the public. However, participants and vendors must pay the entrance fee.
