Woman faces two felonies after starving dog to death in Flint

On April 23, authorities rescued two dogs from a Flint home after receiving video evidence of animal abuse. Upon arrival, the deputies saw no signs of food or water, with the pups being extremely underweight and their ribs and hip bones showing. Sheriff Swanson noted that those are signs of long-term animal abuse, per WNEM.

The video evidence was recordings of dehydrated and emaciated dogs in the house’s backyard. Thus, they are now considered evidence by the Sheriff’s office. Unfortunately, by the time the deputies got to the canines, one of them was already beyond saving and had to be euthanized.

The 30-year-old woman was arrested with a warrant and is expected to face two counts of felonies. The four-count arrest warrant had two counts of killing and torturing an animal and two separate counts of abandoning and cruelty. Sheriff Swanson states that courts treat pets as property, which doesn’t help. So, he is trying to bring more animal abuse cases under the spotlight to push for change.

The Genesee County Sheriff noted that animal abuse cases don’t end there, as they often lead to child abuse and domestic abuse cases as well. He said that if one tortures their furry companions, the same usually spills over to how they treat people.

When encountering an emaciated dog, it is extremely important to take them to a vet promptly. It is easy to overfeed a starved dog, which will do their body more harm than good.
