Senior Dog Finally Adopted After 11 Years in Alabama Shelter

After enduring 11 years in an overcrowded Alabama animal shelter, a senior dog named Fergie received a heartwarming turn of fate. In March, the dog relocated to Wisconsin, where she found solace in a spacious foster home and was lovingly named Fiona. Her journey culminated in a joyful adoption by a family on Friday, April 5.

Albert’s Dog Lounge shared a Facebook update, announcing that Fiona has “found her happily ever after,” as People reports. They are a foster dog rescue that helps senior dogs, hospice dogs, and disabled dogs. The organization played a significant role in facilitating Fiona’s adoption.

They wrote in the post, “After 11 years in the shelter, she now has a FURever family of her own!” Meanwhile, the post includes pictures and clips of Fiona sharing heartfelt moments with her new parents.

After coming to Wisconsin in March, Fiona lived with Lindsey Decker, the Vice President of Albert’s Dog Lounge. Subsequently, a loving family adopted her. Additionally, Decker’s home had other senior dogs, so Fiona had great companions and a large yard to play around. This was far better than what she endured at the shelter.

Decker revealed that she had evaluated many adoption applications until she finally chose a new home for the dog. Thus, she decided on the Saskowski family because they checked all the boxes. They frequently had family present at home, possessed a fenced-in yard, and had other dogs. Moreover, the family had earlier adopted two canines from the rescue, so the organization already trusted them.

Carrie Saskowski stated, “I saw her story online and was just so overwhelmed with sadness that she was in the shelter for so long … And no one would adopt her knowing how sweet she was.” Continuing, she added, “It was just so sad to me, and I thought, oh my gosh, could we have the best life together.”
