A recently homed dog named Sora looked like she had finally found her forever home when someone adopted her from Valley Animal Center in California.
Unfortunately, she’s found herself back at the shelter after spending just 24 hours in her new home. The saddening turn of events has left the shelter heartbroken, given that Sora stayed at the facility for over 900 days prior to her adoption.
Dog who spent years waiting adoption returned to shelter within 24 hours
According to Newsweek, Sora arrived at the Valley Animal Center about two and a half years ago. Her previous owner surrendered her to the shelter, and that marked the beginning of her long journey to finding an adoptive home.
Although Sora has desirable qualities, it took way too long for someone to finally show interest in adopting her.
“Sora is a high-energy dog who loves to play and gets super excited anytime she gets to go on walks,” Sim Kaur, the shelter’s representative, told the news outlet. “She’s great on walks and hikes, making her a good traveling companion. She also loves playing with tennis balls.”
Kaur further stated that Sora “is lovable with humans and has tested well with children over the age of five.”
After staying at the shelter for more than 900 days, an ecstatic Sora finally went home with her new owner. Unfortunately, the owner called the shelter just a day later, informing them of their decision to surrender Sora.
A devastated Kaur shared that this decision has impacted Sora negatively.
“Being in a shelter for many years affects the mental health of our adoptables and it is no different for Sora,” Kaur stated. “Sora did not get enough time to decompress in her new home and was introduced to new family members too quickly.”
Nonetheless, the shelter is optimistic that Sora will soon find her truly forever home.
Kaur spoke to the news outlet about Sora’s idea home. She stated: “Although Sora does well with other dogs at the shelter, she is dog-selective, so we recommend she go to a home where she is the only pet.”
Kaur added: “With her high energy, her future home will need to spend dedicated time with her for training.”
