Texas College Using Traps to Lure Aggressive Stray Dogs

Recent reports of dog bite cases in Corpus Christi, Texas, have raised concerns about stray dog packs in the area. Reportedly, three such incidents occurred at Del Mar College’s Heritage Campus, following which the college students received a notification about Animal Control’s plans to set up food and water traps on campus on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Charles Vela, a 17-year-old high school senior, said that he was bitten on the thigh by a pack of approximately six stray dogs on campus last week, KIII 3News reported. He is undergoing a series of rabies shots now. Following multiple events like this, the Del Mar College students were informed about Animal Control’s plans to set up dog traps on campus.

The officials reportedly have put out a safety advisory for students, urging them to remain vigilant. Further, the students have been asked not to go near the dog traps.

According to the college’s police chief, Animal Control had caught one of the dogs. They have not spotted the pack of dogs this week, the police chief said.

In another incident, a 63-year-old man fell victim to a dog bite attack last week at Hibiscus Street and Highland Avenue. Luciano Quintanilla was knocked down and bitten on the leg by a pack of aggressive dogs, as per KIII 3News. Describing the incident, Quintanilla stated there were about four dogs. “[They] brought me to the ground, made me lose my balance…It could have been worse. If it happened to me, it could happen to anybody,” he added. A neighbor helped him get rid of the dogs, Quintanilla further told media.

He is reportedly undergoing treatment. Animal Control responded and captured three of the dogs involved in the incident on Monday, Feb. 19, according to Quintanilla.
