Authorities have arrested a North Carolina man after malnourished dead dogs were found on his property. He is facing five felony counts of killing animals by starvation and a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty.

6 malnourished, 5 dead dogs found on North Carolina man’s property

On Feb. 6, deputies with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of animal neglect at Llewellyn Jervon Mckinney’s residence in Forest City. Upon arrival at the property, they found two severely malnourished dogs who had been chained up.

After a thorough inspection of the residence, they found four more chronically malnourished dogs. All six animals needed urgent medical attention.

Furthermore, deputies discovered five dead dogs dumped in different spots at the property. The deceased dogs were in varying stages of decomposition, as reported by Fox Carolina.

The deputies immediately contacted animal control officers, who arrived and seized the six living dogs. Animal control also helped in disposing of the deceased canines.

Further investigations into the property’s owner revealed the dogs belonged to McKinney. He has since been released on a $30,000 secure bond and is, therefore, expected to appear in court at an undisclosed date.

Cases of animal abuse are on the rise, and it’s important to familiarize yourself with signs of animal neglect.

By being able to tell whether an animal is undergoing abuse, you’ll be able to make the humane decision that all of us ought to make: reporting suspected cases of animal cruelty to relevant authorities. We all have a role to play in ensuring the world is a safer place for our canine companions and other animals.

It all starts with knowing the warning signs of animal abuse. That way, you’ll know when to speak up and save an animal’s life. While most of us can recognize the obvious signs, such as chaining, hitting an animal, or emaciation, sometimes, these signs can be quite subtle.
