It’s no secret that having a pet is expensive. And, after the surge of “pandemic puppies,” many are feeling the financial burden of their furry friends. The rising cost of living has sadly forced some to give up their beloved pets. But there are resources that can help struggling pet owners. Pet food banks can make the difference between keeping and surrendering a pet. But what about the expenses of veterinary care? It’s unsafe and often illegal to keep dogs without some vaccinations up-t0-date, such as the Rabies vaccine. But for some pet owners, a free or low-cost dog clinic can help keep their pets healthy.

Dog Clinic Changes Lives for Low-Income Dog Owners

A free mobile dog clinic in Detroit offered vaccines at no cost over the span of a weekend. The program intends to keep pets healthy and in the care of their families, regardless of their owners’ financial status.

“I really greatly appreciate it. You know, it was just one of them situations where economically, I couldn’t afford it,” Michelle Butler, a Detroit dog owner, told CBS Detroit.  “But I try my best, you know, the very best that I can in maintaining and making sure that they’re healthy. So this blessed me in a tremendous way.”

The dog clinic not only offered vaccinations but microchipping and city licenses as well.

Caring for Your Pet on a Budget

All of us face financial hardships from time to time. But when your financial situation affects your ability to keep your beloved dog, what can you do?

Pet food banks in your area often supply not only food but other supplies necessary for pet care, such as collars and toys. If you’re unable to find pet-specific aid in your area, consider reaching out to a local shelter or rescue. While they may not advertise this service, many shelters offer supplementary pet supplies to owners in need.

Many communities also offer low-cost dog clinics, like the one mentioned here, along with reduced-cost spay and neuter clinics. It’s important to spay and neuter your pets, as a litter of puppies is not only hard to rehome, but can be a huge financial strain.
