A woman from South Carolina is in a state of shock after her three dogs died shortly after being boarded at the Pitt County K9 Academy. Rebecca Sanders tells WITN that her first dog died while being boarded at the facility. Just days later, her other two dogs died.

“By the time I picked him up to take him to the emergency vet, I put him in my car and he was gone. I grabbed him out of my car and just laid in my driveway while he took his last breath,” Sanders says.

Megan Kirby, another woman who boarded her dogs at the Pitt County K9 Academy, says her dogs returned home with mouth sores and flu-like symptoms. Kirby tells reporters her dogs were healthy when she boarded them at the facility. Upon arriving home, however, the dogs exhibited abnormal signs.

“They never had any of that, I never noticed any of that, but when they got back, I even told my dad,” Kirby recounts. “Do you notice that all three of the dogs are coughing,” she asked him.

I want them investigated,” Kirby says. Like Kirby, Rebecca Sanders expressed concern for other dogs.

“I just don’t want any other family to go through what I’ve gone through,” Sanders said.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture’s Animal Welfare Section is currently investigating the facility.

Pitt County K9 Academy Denies Allegations

The owner of the Pitt County K9 Academy denies the allegations. Macon Moore, the owner, says he would take responsibility if he was at fault.

“If we had done something to these three dogs, I would own up to it and try to do whatever we needed to do. But unfortunately, we didn’t do anything wrong at all,” Moore says. “It’s heartbreaking and I understand the owners are very upset and rightfully so, and I understand they’re grieving. They just lost three dogs, but that’s nothing that Pitt County K9 Academy has done at all.”

Moore says he takes accusations such as these very seriously. Upon receiving the complaints, he says he would temporarily close the facility in order to investigate any potential causes.

The state cannot comment on the investigation until it is finished.
