Moving? Here’s How To Help Your Dog Adjust to the Change

Whether you’re moving to a house down the road or to a new country, your dog is impacted by the change.

As a result, they may display some odd behaviors. Some dogs exhibit mood changes. Some dogs quell their nerves by peeing and pooping in the house. This behavior can be both exhausting and annoying. It may seem like your once potty trained pup regressed. Don’t fret, as this is not the case.

Read on for our tips on helping your dog adjust to a move.

Try to Keep Their Setup the Same

Did your dog have their crate next to your bed or sofa in your old home? Try to place it in the same spot in your new home. Keeping their surroundings as familiar as possible helps with any confusion they may face. Try to keep their food in a relatively similar spot, as well. Food and sleep are two aspects of your dog’s life that should be consistent every day.

Reinforce Potty Training Habits

Accidents in the new house? Try having a mini potty training session with your pup. Take them outside on a leash and give them a treat as soon as they do their business. Immediately bring them back inside. This allows your dog to associate going potty outside with reward. This only works if your dog is potty trained and is having accidents due to confusion.

Keep the Same Routine

Your dog’s internal clock runs like yours. They need a routine revolved around eating and sleeping. Feed them at the same times. Try to wake up around the same time in the morning and go to bed around the same time at night. When your pup sees your routine hasn’t changed, their anxiety about this foreign, new place will dissipate.

Be Patient

Some dogs adjust to change easier than others. Your pup might only take a couple of days to get used to the new spot. They might take a month or two. When it comes down to it, you are the compass in your dog’s life. With patience, they’ll catch up to you.
