Many are wondering how a man got shot by a dog in the first place. On Monday morning, March 10, officers from the Memphis Police Department arrived at the home of Jerald Kirkwood in Frayser, Tennessee who claimed that his dog had accidentally injured him while he was lying in bed, per WREG Memphis. The four-legged culprit was apparently a one-year-old pitbull named Oreo. Here’s what happened to both the dog and the man who got shot.
How did a man get shot by a dog?
Jerald Kirkwood was shot when his dog allegedly got his paw stuck in the trigger guard of a gun, which caused a bullet to fire and graze the man in his left thigh.
An additional report by Fox13 says that the man was in bed with his girlfriend when the incident occurred at 4 AM. While the pair was asleep, Oreo leapt into the bed where the gun was and it went off.
The girlfriend, who asked not to be identified, explains that Oreo “is a playful dog, and he likes to jump around and stuff like that.” One of Kirkwood’s friends said that this was merely “a freak incident.”
After the incident, the girlfriend left the scene and took the gun with her. Meanwhile, Kirkwood was taken to the Regional One hospital in non-critical condition.
Both he and his girlfriend said they would leave the safety on any firearms in their home moving forward, with the girlfriend recommending to “keep the safety on or use a trigger lock.”
Kirkwood is expected to recover, and Oreo is doing alright as well.
This is not the first time that a dog has accidentally discharged a gun. In fact, it happens more often than one might expect, whether it’s a pooch knocking a loaded gun on the floor or triggering a firearm without the safety on.
