Selma Blair’s Dog Scout: Age, Breed & More

Many pet lovers are smitten over Selma Blair’s dog Scout, who frequently appears on the red carpet alongside the actress at the Oscars, film festivals, and even The White House. Scout is a service dog who Blair has had since 2021 and who has helped her cope with her multiple sclerosis diagnosis. In particular, the pooch assists her whenever she feels feint or begins stumbling by giving her an anchor to lean on. Here’s what we know about Scout, including his age and breed.

How old is Selma Blair’s service dog Scout?

Selma Blair’s service dog Scout is estimated to be 4 years old, as of February 3, 2025.

An article about Blair and her dog in SELF dated January 10, 2023 stated that Scout was two years old at the time. Meanwhile, in a People article, she said Scout was “not yet two” in May 11, 2022.

Also, one of the first Instagram posts of Scout was on December 17, 2021, when Blair introduced him as her official service dog for the first time. She said they had become a team after “a year and a half.” That means Scout began training with her somewhere around June or July 2020. Given that initial training for service dogs can begin as early as eight weeks, it’s birthdate is estimated to be around late May or June 2020.

What breed is Selma Blair’s dog Scout?

The breed of Scout, Selma Blair’s dog, is an English red fox labrador retriever, which is a specific type of yellow labrador. It is not a golden retriever, as reported elsewhere.

In comparison to the American labrador, the English labrador has a denser body, a thicker coat, shorter legs, and a blockier head. On top of that, the “red fox” in the name of the breed refers to its coat color, though its more of a darker butterscotch color with a red tinge.

Blair originally adopted and trained with Scout on the recommendation of her neurologist who said that a service dog would potentially help her physically and emotionally. In People, she called him “a tremendous gift” and said, “If I fall into a big [muscle] spasm or have some trouble moving and need to recalibrate, he can get between my legs, help me get up, and balance me.” The actress credits Scout for giving her added mobility and independence.
