Costner’s kindness, Clinton’s compassion

After Tin Cup, I vowed never to see another Kevin Costner movie (a pledge surprisingly easy to stick to). But after hearing this, I may re-think my policy.

Costner is lending his celebrity presence to a little known organization out of Edmonton, Alberta. The group, Orange Dog , was founded by Canadian philanthropist Jan Folk. Its mission? Take dogs facing certain euthanasia in overcrowded California shelters and transfer them to low-volume shelters in Alberta. Tomorrow, Costner and his Lab , Daisy, will take off aboard Orange Dog’s freedom-flying jet in hopes of raising awareness for this worthy cause.

One other celebrity news item of note: I have mixed feelings about her parents, but have to admit I harbor a spot soft for Chelsea Clinton. I was secretly delighted to find out she’ll be tying the knot this Saturday, July 31 – my own wedding anniversary. The icing on the dairy-free cake? Clinton is a vegan and the reception will feature a cruelty-free menu.

So not only does the former first daugher have great taste in wedding dates, her commitment to reducing animal suffering shows true leadership. Congratulations, Chelsea and Marc.
