Crystal or pearl cat litter

One of the more recent developments in the litter world, crystal or pearl litter is made of small granules of silica sand. The granules are covered in tiny pores that absorb urine, then allow it to slowly evaporate. It has great absorption, and for a one-cat household, the makers say you only have to change it about once a month.

Scoop the poop daily, of course, and stir the litter when you do to promote absorption. When the litter is saturated, you’ll notice a smell and pooled urine; then you’ll know it’s time for a litter change. Because it’s so lightweight, carting in a new bag won’t be too taxing.
