Oscar-winner Hugo is available on home video

The Artist may have recently won the most prestigious Oscar categories (including the top prize of Best Picture), but it received the same number of awards – five – as Hugo, which is available on home video today.

This story of a young boy who lives in a railway station became notable for dog lovers when the film’s director, Martin Scorsese, wrote an op-ed piece for the Los Angeles Times. Scorsese protested the omission of Blackie, a Doberman Pinscher, from the Best Dog in a Theatrical Film category for the first annual Golden Collar Awards, a prize that ultimately went to Uggie for The Atrist.

“Uggie plays a nice little mascot who does tricks and saves his master’s life in one of the films,” Scorsese wrote, “While Blackie gives an uncompromising performance as a ferocious guard dog who terrorizes children.

“I’m proud of Blackie, who laid it on the line and dared to risk the sympathy of her audience.”

Is Scorsese right, or is it merely sour grapes? You can decide as Hugo is now available on home video in DVD ($29.99), Blu-ray ($44.99), and 3D ($54.99) formats. All prices are MSRP, but you can probably find it for less at Best Buy or Amazon.

Hugo won five Academy Awards on Sunday: Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Art Direction, and Visual Effects.
