Can Dogs Eat Wasabi? Is Wasabi Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat wasabi? You may be asking this because your pup got a taste of fiery green wasabi paste, and you’re worried that you may need to rush them to the vet. Humans can eat wasabi, so is it also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is no, wasabi is not good for dogs to eat, but it is not toxic. Wasabi, also known as Japanese horseradish, is an incredibly spicy root. Your dog may have gastrointestinal upset if they consume it.

Although wasabi isn’t toxic to dogs, you should still contact your veterinarian if your dog has eaten wasabi. Here’s why wasabi isn’t good for dogs.

Why Is Wasabi Bad For Dogs?

If you’ve ever eaten wasabi, you know just how hot this root is. Just like with us humans, this sushi condiment packs a punch for your doggo, too.

The spice of wasabi is different from that of chili peppers, which are also not good for dogs to eat. Instead of lingering on the lips and tongue, it goes up the nose and can cause your pup to sneeze. They might also vomit or gag as a reflex.

It’s important to note that this root won’t poison your dog, but their reaction to the sudden spice might cause worry.

If your dog is displaying vomiting or diarrhea from eating wasabi, you should contact your vet for guidance. While wasabi is not dangerous for dogs chemically, each pup is unique. Yours may require some special attention to get them back on their feet after consuming this spicy root.

Dogs are much more likely to come into contact with wasabi paste than the entire root. If your pup ate — or even licked — wasabi paste, they will most likely show discomfort by pawing at their face.

Even a small taste of wasabi paste can cause gastrointestinal upset, so your pup may be in for some diarrhea. Your doggo might need to forgo their food until their digestive system can regulate itself.

When they seem to be feeling better, you might try giving your pup some plain boiled chicken and white rice to soothe their tummy.
