Can Dogs Eat Bok Choy? Is Bok Choy Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat bok choy? You may be asking this because you want to feed your furry friend a new snack. Humans can eat bok choy, so is it also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is yes, bok choy is safe for dogs to eat. It contains nutrients that are great for your pup’s health.

But as always, you must contact your vet before feeding your doggo any human food like bok choy. Here’s what you should know about feeding bok choy to your dog.

How Is Bok Choy Good For Dogs?

Bok choy is a leafy green veggie that typically comes attached to its stalk. The leafy greens of bok choy are the nutrient-rich parts of the veggies. The white stalks contain no nutritional value.

In addition to being high in antioxidants, the leaves of bok choy contain significant amounts of both vitamin A and folate, both of which are beneficial to your pup. Vitamin A is an essential part of your dog’s health, and folate, or folic acid, promotes cell growth.

Because the fibrous nature of the veggie can help with thyroid function, bok choy is also recommended as a supplement for fiber in dogs with a certain thyroid disease known as hypothyroidism, a relatively common disorder in which a dog’s thyroid glands underproduce a hormone necessary for regulating metabolic rates in the body.

Because of its many benefits, bok choy is a wonderful treat. It is very similar to other dark green, leafy vegetables, like spinach.

Because the stalks of bok choy do not have nutritional value, you can leave those out of your dog’s snack time unless they just enjoy crunching. When it comes to the leafy greens, you can feed those to your dog raw or cooked.

Regardless, you should cut the leaves into smaller pieces because dogs don’t digest leaves the way humans do. You might even try pureeing it.

If you cook your dog’s bok choy, try boiling or blanching. Make sure you leave the cooked bok choy free of oils and seasonings, as these can upset your pup’s sensitive tummy.

If you choose to puree the bok choy, you might consider mixing the puree with water in an ice tray to make a fun, frozen treat for your doggo.
