Can Dogs Drink Carbonated Water? Is Carbonated Water Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs drink carbonated water? This is something you might have found yourself wondering if your dog begged for a taste after you opened a bottle of carbonated water to enjoy a few bubbly sips. If humans can drink carbonated water, can dogs safely drink it too?

The short answer is yes, dogs can drink carbonated water. You just need to make sure that you’re serving only carbonated water and not water that includes extra added flavors. Even then, you’ll only want to keep portions to a couple of sips.

As always, you must ask your regular vet before sharing any human substance with your favorite pooch, including carbonated water. Here’s what you need to know about carbonated water and dogs.

How Is Carbonated Water Good For Dogs?

All dogs need to stay hydrated. Fresh water is the best way to achieve sufficient hydration, and as long as the carbonated water you’re letting your dog drink from contains nothing but water, it will provide a level of hydration.

In some cases, dogs who are reluctant to drink an adequate amount of water might even be intrigued by the bubbles in carbonated water.

If you’re thinking of letting your dog enjoy some carbonated water to cool off, it’s worth repeating that you need to ensure that you’re serving water and nothing else. Some commercial brands of carbonated water might also contain additional flavors and artificial sweeteners, including xylitol. Avoid letting your dog drink these at all costs.

Secondly, some brands of carbonated water also contain sodium. Read the label closely to make sure that you don’t inadvertently up your canine’s sodium intake.

When it comes to the amount of carbonated water that you let your dog drink, it’s best to err on the cautious side. There isn’t a huge amount of research available on the topic of dogs consuming carbonated beverages. However, there’s a chance that drinking too much carbonated water could pave the way for a case of bloat.

So if you find yourself enjoying some carbonated water to stay refreshed, then feel free to pour your dog a small amount. Just make sure that normal water, and ideally filtered water, makes up the majority of their daily liquid intake.
