Fanconi Syndrome in Dogs: Symptoms, Causes, & Treatments

Fanconi syndrome in dogs is a kidney disease. The condition affects how important substances like water, potassium, and sodium are absorbed.

In short, nutrients and electrolytes are not absorbed properly.

Additionally, three-quarters of cases are reported in Basenji dogs. But it’s not known why this is.

If you see the signs of the condition in your dog, get to a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Here’s what you should know about the symptoms, causes, and treatments for the condition.

The condition produces a range of symptoms. For example, some of the most common symptoms are:

  • Peeing a lot
  • Losing weight

The cause of the condition is inherited. Specifically, three-quarters of cases happen in Basenji dogs. However, the condition has also been confirmed in the following breeds:

  • Norwegian Elkhound
  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Shetland Sheepdog
  • Labrador Retriever
  • Border Terrier
  • Miniature Schnauzer
  • Whippet

Additionally, most dogs who develop the condition are between two and four years old.

Treatments for the Condition in Dogs

Firstly, your vet will ask about your dog’s symptoms. Secondly, your vet will ask about your dog’s full medical history. This will include breed-specific problems.

Thirdly, a full physical examination will be carried out. Also, blood and urine tests will be taken. The subsequent results will show your dog’s levels of potassium, sodium, and amino acids.

Generally, treatment is based around managing the condition. This will vary depending on your dog’s needs. For example, potassium supplements can help in some cases. Alternatively, diet changes can work. Your vet will help you formulate a safe diet for your dog.

Finally, make sure your dog always has access to a lot of fresh water. This will help manage the condition.
