Actor Carrie Fisher, perhaps most famous for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars movies, passed away at the age of 60, leaving behind her beloved French Bulldog, Gary. For several years, Gary was Fisher’s constant companion, helping her cope with bipolar disorder. Fisher spoke about how Gary’s devotion helped to calm her.

Gary was with her all the time. He showed up at the Star Wars: The Force Awakens premier, the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, the Telluride Film Festival, television interviews, red carpet events, and press tours. His hanging tongue and adorable face earned him a fan following, and it was easy to see that he and Fisher had a deep bond.

Gary was with Fisher on the flight when she had her heart attack and went to the hospital while she received treatment. With the rest of her fans, Gary hoped his mom would return home soon. Fisher expressed her wish that if anything happened to her that her daughter, actor Billie Lourd, should take Gary home with her. Lourd has a French Bulldog of her own named Tina.

Even though Gary is going to a loving home, he will not soon forget his mom and the bond that they had. The comfort he brought to her in life reminds us all of the love we share with our dogs and how they’re always there for us when we need them. Hopefully Gary will be able to continue to share his love with the humans who are with him.
