Daniela and Dixie from Central New Jersey

Human: Daniela

Canine: Dixie

Location: Central New Jersey

Type: German Shepherd Dog / Mutt mix

Our Story:
One day I was in a shelter parking lot with my car door open when some people came out of the shelter with a dog on a leash. They took her to the field adjacent to the parking lot to visit with her. I suddenly heard screaming and looked up to see the dog flying through the field, leash dragging behind her. The people had dropped the leash and the dog was making a run for it – straight into my car. As she settled herself down in the passenger seat, the animal control officer came over and said, “If those people don’t take her, she is going down today.” I looked over at the dog and said “You just stay right where you are.” I took Dixie to the vet only to find out that she had a serious heart defect called patent ductus arteriosus and without surgery had only 1 month to live. She had the surgery which turned out to be partially successful. I was told she would live half of a life. Dixie will be celebrating her 10th birthday soon and is still going strong.
