The Royal Family are known for being animal lovers. Queen Elizabeth II’s love for Corgis needs no introduction, while going back in history Queen Victoria owned no fewer than 88 Collies over the years.
But what dogs does the family currently have? Let’s find out.
What Dogs Does the Royal Family Have?
King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort – Jack Russell Terriers
King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort, have two Jack Russell Terriers, Beth and Bluebell. Camilla adopted them from London’s Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2017.
“The nice thing about dogs is you can sit them down, you could have a nice long conversation, you could be cross, you could be sad and they just sit looking at you wagging their tail,” Camilla once said in a radio interview.
She adopted Beth first. And a few weeks later, she took Bluebell home, too. The pup had been found alone in the woods in a bad condition.
Per the BBC, the dogs “adore” children and are allowed nearly everywhere, but aren’t allowed on the bed.
The Prince and Princess of Wales – Cocker Spaniels
Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Prince and Princess of Wales, first welcomed English Cocker Spaniel Lupo. He was born in December 2011. He was bred from Ella, owned by Michael and Carole Middleton, Kate’s parents. However, Lupo died at the age of eight in November 2020.
Lupo has been credited with raising the popularity of the breed in his native United Kingdom. Online searches for the breed increased after his adoption, as did thefts of English Cocker Spaniels.
However, the couple have another Cocker Spaniel, Orla. They brought her home shortly before Lupo’s death, and she’s related to him, too. Lupo was Orla’s uncle.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex – Beagles and Labrador Retriever
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have three dogs together. Meghan first adopted Beagle Guy through Petfinder in 2015, and he accompanied her when she moved to the UK. And, he’s even featured in his own children’s book: His Royal Dogness, Guy the Beagle: The Rebarkable True Story of Meghan Markle’s Rescue Dog.
In the summer of 2018, the couple then adopted Pula, a black Labrador Retriever, and in August 2022 they rescued a seven-year-old Beagle, Momma Mia, who was originally bred for animal testing. However, investigators discovered animal welfare violations were discovered at the breeding facility. As a result, the Humane Society of the United States got permission to rescue the dogs in June 2022.
Meghan formerly owned a Labrador-Shepherd mix called Bogart, but due to the dog’s age and health issues, she wasn’t able to take him with her to the UK. Instead, he remained in her native Canada with close friends.
Princess Anne – Bull Terriers
Anne, Princess Royal, is well-known for her love of Bull Terriers. It’s unknown how many Bull Terriers she currently has, but in January 2023 a royal insider claimed that one of her dogs attacked another dog on Boxing Day, during the Boxing Day shoot.
Back in November 2002, Princess Anne pleaded guilty to one charge of having a dog dangerously out of control and was fined £500 (over $600), becoming the first member of the royal family to be convicted of a criminal offense.
Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York – Corgis
After the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, her Corgis Muick and Sandy went to live with Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie – Norfolk Terriers
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie share four dogs, and are known for their love of Norfolk Terriers: Jack, Cici, Teddy, and Ginger. Orange, their other dog, sadly died in 2019 after eating a poisonous plant in Windsor Great Park.
Beatrice even offered The Queen two of Ginger’s litter, but she ultimately declined because she was worried about tripping over the dogs and hurting herself.
Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex – Labrador Retriever and Cocker Spaniel
The Queen’s youngest son shares a black Labrador and a Cocker Spaniel with his wife – as well as a tortoise, curiously.
