150 Dogs Rescued From the Arizona Desert

A tragic report from Arizona’s Family: Authorities rescued 150 dogs living in the middle of the Arizona desert.

Responders found the dogs in “a campground full of trash and debris… kept in cages and handmade kennels,” per the report. Apparently, the dogs belonged to a couple living in the desert about 60 miles outside the city of Surprise. At the time, the couple was living on state land and was being forced to move.

Rescuing 150 Dogs

Sky Sanctuary Rescue, a local animal rescue group, and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s department responded to the scene. The couple had reached out to them seeking help with their dogs. Understandably, authorities arrived expecting the worst. However, authorities found the dogs in overall good health. Furthermore, the dogs were docile and friendly.

Caitlin Beall, director of Sky Sanctuary Rescue, told CBS 5, “It was extremely surprising…when we arrived on scene, everybody was well-fed, everybody happy, everybody socialized.”

A Helping Hand

Initially, the Sanctuary’s medical center received any dogs needing urgent care. Meanwhile, the rest of the rescued dogs are being processed before going up for adoption. Alongside that, the Sheriff’s department also took a large number of dogs to the local shelter.

The couple housing the dogs isn’t facing charges and has found a new place to live. Elli Smith, the founder of Sky Sanctuary Rescue, told AZ Family, “we see people that neglect animals with all the resources in the world. To see people with nothing taking such good care of these animals, it was really heartbreaking.”

Finding Future Parents

Currently, the dogs are getting the support and care they need. Later on, they will need a lot of resources and help. Sky Sanctuary Rescue says the large influx of pets means they’ll need more volunteers and foster parents to reach out and help. Interested in adopting one of these lovely pups?
