A drone training session for local police turned into a real mission when deputies spotted a dog in the infrared camera.
As soon as the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office’s UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) team found Farah roaming the Colorado wilderness, they immediately went into rescue mode.

According to a Facebook post made by the FCOS, Farah, a Golden Retriever, had been roaming for three months after escaping a car crash. The driver of the vehicle had a seizure, eventually crashing at US 50 and Colorado 9, reports KRDO. This area is a county away from Farah’s home in Cripple Creek, Colorado and has heavy vehicle traffic.
Taylor Salazar adopted Farah after her husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2019. She says that she never gave up hope that she was alive — and for a good reason. Locals in the area where the crash occurred had video footage of the pup drinking water nearby. However, nobody could get close enough to catch her.
This is where the FCOS UAS team comes in. The squad deployed a drone in the area where the footage of Farah was taken and spotted her “within minutes.”
They then called Salazar to the location, hoping that the Golden would be less skittish if she saw her mom.
Luckily, the plan worked. “She stuck her head through the barbed wire fence, and then the next minute she’s laying in my lap and I was like, ‘I got her!'” Salazar told KRDO. Unfortunately, it appears that Farah had a difficult time while roaming. She weighs half of her previous body weight and needs one leg amputated. The vet who examined Farah believes she was hit by a car at some point.
