A shocking discovery has been made recently by the Dogs of Chernobyl, an affiliate of the Clean Futures Fund (CFF) non-profit organization. The group discovered blue dogs roaming the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, established after the devastating 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Notably, numerous dogs reside in the exclusion zone and are descendants of pets abandoned by owners after the disaster. Further, CFF has taken on the responsibility of looking after them.
Video shows blue dogs appearing in Chernobyl
Dogs of Chernobyl shared a new Instagram video featuring blue dogs wandering through the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The organization revealed in the post that they were present at the site, capturing dogs for “sterilization,” only to discover blue dogs. “We are not sure exactly what is going,” they added.
The group said they did not know the reason for the dogs’ blue pigment, even though locals had asked them about it. They assured followers that they were trying to capture the dogs to figure out what was happening with them. “Most likely they’re getting into some sort of chemical,” they speculated. “They seem to be very active and at this point we have not been able to catch them.”
Clean Futures Fund speculated that the dogs had a blue hue because of a “leaking Porta Potty.” They ruled out radiation and spray paint as possible reasons and claimed that the blue dye was “temporary” (via CBS News).
As mentioned on its official website, the Dogs of Chernobyl program was started by CFF in 2017. The program was formed to control the stray dog population in the exclusion zone and to prevent suffering. Moreover, the program aims to provide excellent care for the estimated 700 dogs and 100 cats residing in the zone.
Care is provided through year-round feeding, access to necessary veterinary care, and monitoring of individual populations living throughout the zone. Furthermore, the stray dogs residing in the zone are cared for by over 3,500 workers, who have essentially adopted them. The workers also save portions of their meals to feed the dogs.
