We commonly think of dogs and cats as being opposites. You’re either a cat person or a dog person, people often say, or they’ll use the phrase ‘fought like cats and dogs’.

But dogs and cats can get on well together in many cases. And one such pair have gone viral on TikTok

Dog and Rescue Cat Become Fast Friends

In the video, which has amassed over 1.8 million views, Jackie the black cat’s pet mom is holding her, while the text on the clip says: “My boyfriend: I don’t know if we should adopt her.. she attacks everyone except for the dog. Me: that’s exactly why we should adopt her.”

The video then cuts to footage of the rescue cat with Levi the dog. They’re seen snuggling and playing together, and even grooming each other. Sure, maybe some dogs won’t get on with cats, but Levi seems to be taking their big sibling role to the new rescue cat very seriously.

A Harmonious Household

But, what do the experts say about cats and dogs? According to the American Kennel Club, the two can certainly get on well together. However, there are things that you can do as a pet parent to help.

If you already have a cat and you’re thinking of getting a dog, bear in mind that some breeds are better suited. Non-sporting dogs are often compatible with felines, as they don’t have hunting in their nature, while some breeds are predisposed to hunt and catch vermin just like cats. These include many toy breeds, like the Affenpinscher.

What if you already have a dog and you’re planning to introduce a cat? Consider that older cats might not react as well to joining a forever home with a dog, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work out! Just be sure to take it slow, per PAWS’ advice, and swap scents before both animals interact with each other.
