Roger the dog came to the rescue of an elderly man trapped in his car overnight earlier this month, Dorset Live reported.
The pup, a Jack Russell–Poodle mix, noticed that his neighbor’s garage door was open, so went to investigate. Inside the garage, he found his neighbor trapped in his car. Refusing to leave his side, his dog parent came over to see what was going on. His parent then called the local fire and rescue service.
An Important Role
The man had fallen while in the car the day before, leaving him trapped under the steering wheel. Fortunately, the fire service got him out and gave him “immediate emergency care”. Paramedics were called to the scene shortly after, and they took over his medical treatment.
Morris Cohen, 94, later thanked Roger for his part in the rescue effort. He explained to the Bournemouth Echo that he “hit the floor of the car”, wedging him under the clutch and brakes. Because the car was in his garage, and his family were away at the time, nobody realized that he was trapped until Roger found him.
“I was calling for help, but no one could hear me, even though the garage door was up,” he explained. “I was stuck in the car overnight; it was getting colder and colder. It was horrible.
He continued: “It was impossible to get out. I was really lucky because hypothermia had already set in. It was about 10am the following morning. The dog from over the road came sniffing around. I think he could hear me shouting”.
“Extremely Lucky”
After Roger stayed in the garage with Morris, his dog mom Frances Wall came over. She saw Morris in the car, and with her brother tried to get him out. But after having no luck, they rang the emergency services.
“I owe my life to that dog,” said Morris, “They said if I would’ve been there for a few more hours, I would have been a goner. I was extremely lucky.”
Morris spent ten days in hospital, but returned home to his wife Linda on Friday (Dec. 16). While he’s given Roger a Christmas stocking full of dog treats as a reward, he said he’ll never be able to do enough to show his thanks.
