Not many dogs go about their days wearing a tie. But Duke is no ordinary dog – the five-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever works as a therapy dog and helps the students at Buckhorn Elementary School in Valrico, Florida, reports ABC Action News.

Duke visits the school on Mondays and Fridays, giving a boost to both students and teachers, and having a positive impact on the attendance of children and their mood too.

Encouraging Good Behavior

“He’s used as incentive for behavior and academics,” explained school principal Tara Horn. Meanwhile, his presence encourages students to get to school on time too.

Sabrina Dina, a varying exceptionalities teacher at Buckhorn, is Duke’s dog mom. Some of her students have complex emotional needs, but Duke is a positive presence. “Some just walk in with a sad face, but when they see him, they’re overjoyed,” said Dina.

As a reward or incentive, Duke will visit different classrooms across the elementary school, and doesn’t forget to drop by the front office for some food, either.

Fifth-grader London explained that her peers’ behavior improves when Duke’s around, as “that way, he gets to stay longer”.

The hard-working canine saw his local profile increase when he had his photo taken for Picture Day – complete with a tie. It became popular on social media.

Why Work With Therapy Dogs?

Therapy dogs can be a great fit for schools, from elementary schools up to even colleges. Their presence can improve attendance and behavior, and be a calming influence on students. They can boost the confidence of students, too.

Students who may not feel comfortable reading to teachers or peers may be happier reading to a therapy dog, or they might simply want to talk to the dogs, who are good listeners.

Studies have even suggested cognitive and academic benefits when it comes to interacting with therapy dogs. From better reading ability to problem-solving skills, there are myriad benefits to therapy dogs.
