A senior dog who was found almost lifeless in a ditch has been reunited with her owner in Maine.

Senior Dog Discovered in Ditch

According to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, the authorities received a call on Sunday around 5:37 a.m. about a dog abandoned in a ditch in Arrowsic. A deputy named Mark Anderson responded to the call and discovered the pup, who seemed near frozen. Based on claw marks, it appeared the dog had attempted and failed to climb out of the ditch. Unfortunately, her paws got too cold and she was unable to escape.

The temperature was only in the single digits on the day the dog was recovered. As Deputy Anderson approached the pup, she held up a paw and whimpered. He transported the chilly canine to the dispatch center. There, the dog was bundled in blankets and placed near a portable heater to stop her shivering and get her back to a healthy temperature. Once she was warm again, her appetite returned. The deputies put a plate of food together and the dog licked it clean.

Deputy Searches for Dog Owner

Deputy Anderson created lost dog flyers, then started canvassing the area in the hopes of find the dog’s owner. Eventually, he did. The dog’s owner was an elderly woman who had left the dog outside the previous night. When the senior dog didn’t come back, her owner waited up for her to return. She told Deputy Anderson that the pup was at least 14 years old.

Dog and owner are now together again (and hopefully staying warm).

“A huge shout out to Communications Specialist Shaun and Dori, as well as Deputy Anderson, for providing extraordinary care for this animal,” a Facebook post from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office read. “The efforts of these three Sagadahoc County employees, without a doubt, saved the life of this precious pet. Kudos to you!”
