A U.S. Air Force sergeant is trying to bring home a stray dog she bonded with during deployment abroad.

Air Force Sergeant Meet Stray Dog

U.S. Air Force Sergeant Kay first met Diesel, a skittish and malnourished stray dog, while serving in the Middle East. The canine wandered onto the base where she was stationed, so Sgt. Kay gave the pup attention – and even started sharing her lunch with him. They soon became the best of friends.

But Sgt. Kay was eventually relocated, forcing her and Diesel to say goodbye. Soon after she departed the base, other members of the Air Force reported that Diesel “started acting depressed,” according to People.

Now, Sgt. Kay and Paws of War, a nonprofit that facilitates the adoption of stray pets by U.S. service members, are working together to bring Diesel back to the United States.

“I can’t think of something I have wished for and prayed for in my life more than this actually happening and Diesel being with me in America,” Sgt. Kay said in a statement.

Donations Needed to Bring Dog Home

Paws of War has initiated the process of raising funds, and making arrangements for, the transportation of Sgt. Kay’s canine companion. The nonprofit hopes fellow dog lovers will donate to the cause so that Sgt. Kay and Diesel can be reunited.

“We can make this happen for both of them, but we need everyone’s help to chip in as these missions cost lots of money,” Derek Cartwright, a veteran and the coordinator for Paws of War, said. “We owe it to Sergeant Kay to help reunite Diesel with her in America. Their hearts are apart right now, but we can bring them together. We need the support. It’s a team effort to pull off a mission like this.”
