Paddington had every reason to think he was about to be left behind. After meeting a British traveler in Peru and becoming attached to her, the former street dog watched her prepare to leave once again. But there was something he didn’t know: she had returned specifically to bring him home. A year later, a video has given viewers a look into the emotional journey that followed.
Rescue dog says goodbye to human thinking she’s leaving him, but he’s going home with her
A video shared by @paddingtonfromperu offers a look back at the emotional journey of Paddington from a street dog in Peru to a much-loved pet in the United Kingdom. The video begins with Paddy sitting quietly, appearing sad as he watches his human. He seems to be convinced that she is about to leave without him.
He had no way of knowing that she had returned to Peru with an entirely different plan. The woman he had become attached to was not preparing to say goodbye for good. She was there to take him with her.
Now, the video marks one year since the beginning of the rescue mission. Text onscreen explains that the woman had originally “flown across the world to Peru for a dog” and ended up turning her life upside down. A montage then follows the series of events that made it possible for Paddy to leave his life on the streets and travel to his new home.
The pup first met British traveler Mirelle Radley in April 2025, while she was visiting a village in Peru’s Sacred Valley of the Incas. The dog quickly became attached to her and began following Radley and her cousin Adam whenever they went out. Even when they tried to leave him behind temporarily, Paddy seemed determined to stay close.
By the third day, Radley was already trying to work out whether she could take him home. That decision meant navigating a lengthy and expensive process. She asked for help on social media, raised money for Paddy’s care, and worked with the Peruvian charity Colitas Con Canas.
Eventually, the long rescue mission ended with the pup arriving at Radley’s home in Cambridge. In the video, the emotional goodbye transforms into the beginning of a completely different life. “It was not a smooth sailing rescue by any means… but worth every second of stress to get my best friend home,” Radley wrote in the caption.
