This Instagram video opens to show Arya being led back toward her kennel when she suddenly turns around and pulls her handler in the opposite direction. Someone she instinctively knows will help her is waiting nearby. And this shelter dog seems very determined to get back to them instead of spending another minute in the kennel. The video shared by volunteer Jan Vega on @hicarsondogs shows that little burst of determination, with Arya planting her feet and refusing to give up on the person she wants to see. And that one little moment changed her story forever.
‘Desperate’ shelter dog runs back to her foster’s arms and ultimately gets adopted
Arya had been through years of uncertainty, including different foster homes and periods of boarding after being saved from euthanasia at Carson Animal Shelter. Then came one particular weekend that changed everything. In the video, we see her handler walking her back toward her kennel when Arya suddenly turns around. She pulls toward the people on the other side of the partition, clearly recognizing someone waiting there.
The in-video caption says her determination not to return to the kennel touched the hearts of people who saw her story. It is the tiniest of moments, but it says so much about where she wanted to be. That weekend, thanks to Jan, she got a break.
Arya went home with her, where the change was obvious. She played with toys, stretched out on a soft couch for belly rubs, and even got the birthday celebration she had missed for the previous three years. There was a candle, there were treats, and, finally, plenty of room to simply enjoy being a dog.
A foster stepped up to take Arya from Jan, so she never had to return to her kennel. She traded shelter concrete for grass, beach walks, and everyday life outside boarding. And then came the happiest update in the form of a screenshot of a text.
Her foster, Natalie, helped find her a forever home in New Mexico. After years of waiting, Arya will soon be packing her things for the last time. The video has received more than 1,000 likes, with viewers celebrating the news and offering support for the bloodwork and travel costs still needed before her journey home.
