Shelter Dog Tries To Leave Every Time Someone Opens the Door for a Heartbreaking Reason

Benicio has a heartbreaking habit at the shelter: whenever someone opens his room, he tries to follow them out, seemingly desperate for company after everything he has endured. Rescuers found the 4-year-old, 70-pound dog in Yakima with his face covered in porcupine quills, and he needed two surgeries to remove them.

The shelter recently shared a glimpse of Benicio’s life, showing how he still longs for affection despite his painful past. He now enjoys a spacious room with toys, bedding, and other comforts, but he still struggles when left alone.

Before Benicio reached Homeward Pet Adoption Center, he endured a terrifying encounter with a porcupine. The quills covered his face so extensively that veterinarians performed two surgeries to remove them. Despite the ordeal, Benicio still trusts people. The shelter describes him as a sweet dog who gets excited when someone enters his space, wags his small tail, and eagerly seeks attention.

The footage shows how much Benicio values human interaction. When someone approaches, he eagerly moves closer and tries to leave his room when the door opens, as if hoping they will take him along. At other times, he leans into people for affection. Although Benicio has experienced more than most dogs his age should, the shelter says he remains full of personality and is ready to begin his next chapter.

The shelter has waived Benicio’s adoption fee, allowing someone to bring him home for $0 in adoption fees. It encourages potential adopters to visit bit.ly/hpac-dog or use the link in its Instagram bio to learn more. The organization also asks supporters to donate through bit.ly/hpac-donate now to help it care for dogs like Benicio and provide animals with medical care, shelter, and a second chance.

Benicio’s story quickly drew affectionate reactions from viewers, many of whom focused on his gentle personality and adorable face. One user wrote, “What a cutie!” Another commented, “He’s adorable.” A third viewer added, “What a sweet guy.”
