Street Dog’s Recovery Slips Backward Until Rescuers Step in Again Before It’s Too Late

Good intentions do not always lead to good outcomes, especially when it comes to caring for stray animals. While offering food to a street dog may seem like an act of kindness, overfeeding can create serious health problems that are difficult to reverse. That lesson was highlighted in a recent rescue story shared by a Thailand-based animal shelter after one community dog’s weight reached a concerning level.

Street dog’s road to recovery takes a heartbreaking turn until rescuers give her a second chance

@wearehappydooggo, a Thailand-based rescue, has documented Bella’s recovery, a community dog whose health suffered after being consistently overfed by well-meaning tourists. The video begins with footage of Bella lying on the ground.

Meanwhile, on-screen text reads, “People were literally killing her with kindness.” Although she was clearly loved by those who visited the area, the rescue explained that the constant stream of food eventually took a serious toll on her body.

According to the rescuer, Bella weighed 42.2 kilograms when she arrived at the rescue just a week earlier. The excess weight had made even basic movement difficult, leaving her barely able to stand. Concerned that her condition would continue to worsen, the rescue team stepped in before it was too late.

The shelter immediately developed a recovery plan to help Bella lose weight safely rather than quickly. Rather than relying on exercise alone, the team combined a carefully controlled diet with activities that would not place unnecessary strain on her already-stressed joints and heart.

One of the biggest parts of Bella’s rehabilitation has been hydrotherapy. The video shows her walking in water, allowing her to stay active while reducing the impact on her body. The gentle exercise helps her build strength and improve mobility without adding further stress to her joints.

After one week of treatment, it was time to see whether the hard work was paying off. As Bella stepped onto the scales again, the update revealed that she had already begun shedding the dangerous weight. The rescue shared in its caption that Bella had lost 3 kilograms in her first week and was already feeling lighter.

Happy Doggo added that Bella still has a “long road ahead,” but said the team is “proud of her determination.” With a strict diet, tailored exercise, and hydrotherapy, the rescue believes she is taking important steps toward a healthier future.
