The hardest part of volunteering at a shelter might be making it all the way to the exit after a dog like Schatzi looks your way. That’s exactly what happened in a video shared by @sharing.lov, where one volunteer couldn’t leave without spending time with this sweet senior shelter dog. This sweet ten-year-old German Shepherd named Schatzi was abandoned at Cobb County Animal Services in Marietta, Georgia. The camera lingers on her kennel card for a moment. At just 35 pounds, she looks every bit as thin as the numbers suggest. Fortunately, things begin to change once she’s outside with someone willing to sit beside her for a while.
Senior shelter dog’s sad eyes change to smile upon meeting human
The video opens with a volunteer walking past the kennels at the end of the day. Schatzi just peers out from behind the bars with a deeply sad expression. Her official kennel card reveals that she is ten years old and weighs only 35 pounds. Seeing a German Shepherd this thin feels especially shocking. She’s so scraggly that her ribs stand out right away, making the sight even tougher to take in.
Since she arrived at the shelter as a lost dog, the staff named her Schatzi, which means “sweetheart” in German. Rather than walking away, the volunteer decides to spend some quality time with Schatzi outside. Once there, Schatzi politely accepts treats but ignores all the colorful toys. There isn’t any pressure to play. The volunteer simply sits beside her and lets Schatzi decide what she needs.
Bit by bit, she leans into the love, and those worried eyes don’t seem quite as heavy anymore. More than 13,000 people have already liked Schatzi’s story. The comments quickly filled with people rooting for Schatzi and hoping someone brings her home soon. One fan commented that shepherds are the kindest, most protective companions anyone can own. Another person noted that her hopeful eyes show exactly how much love she still has to give.
The video closes with one simple request: share Schatzi’s story so this senior shelter dog has a better chance of finding a home.
