A heartbreaking video is urging animal lovers to take a second look at Donna, a frightened 2-year-old shelter dog. While many dogs bark for attention, Donna curls up on her bed, trembling as the noise echoes through the shelter around her. The clip, shared by shelter volunteer Jessica on Instagram, offers a glimpse into Donna’s daily life at the shelter and highlights how dramatically her demeanor changes the moment she steps outside.
Shelter dog living with fear behind kennel door waits for a loving family
The video opens with Donna lying on a raised kennel bed wrapped in a bright red blanket. Text across the screen reads, “Donna is terrified in the shelter.” Instead of barking or jumping against the kennel door, Donna remains still, her body tense as she watches the hallway. Another message explains that she “trembles in fear.” The loud barking from neighboring kennels appears to leave Donna anxious and withdrawn, making it difficult for her to relax indoors.
Once volunteers take Donna outside, her personality begins to change. The video shows her lowering her nose into the grass, calmly exploring the scents around her. According to the creator, simply sniffing outdoors helps Donna decompress and settle her nerves after the stress of being inside the shelter. Although she remains cautious, she appears noticeably more relaxed away from the constant noise, offering a glimpse of the dog she could become in a peaceful home. The clip ends with a simple plea: “Donna needs a hero. Meet her at IACS today.”
In the caption, the creator explained that Donna desperately needs to leave the shelter before prolonged stress takes a greater toll on her. The volunteer described the 2-year-old as a dog who needs a quiet, loving environment where she can finally feel safe enough to decompress. Anyone interested in adopting her is expected to meet Donna at Indianapolis Animal Care Services, located at 5001 E. Raymond Street, Indianapolis, Indiana.
