A lucky Golden Retriever named Chester miraculously survived a jaw-dropping 80-foot cliff fall before emergency crews pulled off a wild midnight rescue. Chester reportedly ran off after being startled during a walk near Peveril Point in Dorset, U.K. By the time he was found, he was stuck on a narrow ledge, and a storm was already moving in. It took a team of coastguards and firefighters over five grueling hours in the pouring rain to get the Golden Retriever down safely and reunite him with his family.
‘Frightened’ Golden Retriever reunites with family after long and heroic rescue mission
The BBC reported that the effort to reach Chester stretched into the early hours of Thursday along the Dorset coastline. After being “frightened,” the Golden Retriever bolted and wound up in a spot that was difficult for anyone to reach. Spotting Chester didn’t solve the problem, though.
Rescuers still had to work out how to safely reach a scared dog perched in a dangerous spot while conditions kept getting worse. Rain moved in, and an electrical storm approached. The nervous dog had his own concerns. He’d been through a lot already and wasn’t too sure about the unfamiliar people coming toward him.
Coastguards, firefighters, lifeboat crews, and rope specialists all played a part in the effort. A returning lifeboat crew who had initially spotted the Golden Retriever remained nearby to help illuminate the area while the rescue continued.
Chester also had a few ideas of his own. Rescuers attempted to secure him using specialist equipment designed for animal recoveries. More than once, the dog slipped free and forced rescuers to start that part of the process all over again. Even so, the teams kept working. After roughly five and a half hours of careful work, teams finally got Chester to safety and guided him away from the cliff.
A spokesperson for the Swanage Coastguard told the BBC, “This was an outstanding example of multi-agency teamwork coming together to safely reunite a much-loved family dog with his owners.” And of course, it was a big relief when the family finally reunited with their rescued Golden Retriever. The crews also warned everyone to keep dogs on leads near steep drops to prevent similar mishaps from happening.
