It sounds ridiculous at first, but sitting down to ‘explain’ something big to your dog can sneak up on you emotionally. Laura, the mom behind @theherdinghouse, recently shared a touching video from the archives. After losing her big brother, Ryker, Gypsy spent the next year as the only dog in the house. Soon, you realise you’re watching the exact second she learned her family was growing again. It is a conversation between the Shetland Sheepdog and her owner, where you can tell Gypsy is genuinely following along.
Dog listens when owner says they are bringing home another dog
The video begins with Laura calling Gypsy over for a serious heart-to-heart. Gypsy looks up at her, ears forward, completely locked in. As her owner starts explaining the plan, the dog’s excitement becomes impossible to contain. She hops from the ottoman to the couch and has to be called back more than once. “Gypsy had been pretty lonesome since losing her brother, Ryker,” Laura shared. This history makes the upcoming update feel even more meaningful.
So when her mom says, “Today we’re gonna go meet somebody,” Gypsy perks up instantly. When Laura speaks the word “puppy”, Gypsy loses it in the best way. She lets out a sharp, joyful bark and wags her tail vigorously. She even pops up onto her mom’s knees, excitement fully taking over.
Her mom explains that the puppy’s name is Willow and that she looks just like her. Gypsy pauses, stares straight at her mom, tail still going, clearly processing every word. Then she pops back onto the couch and out of frame.
The post has earned hundreds of likes and over 20,000 views. Plenty of people in the comments were convinced Gypsy knew exactly what was happening. One fan noted that she was already ready to go meet her sibling. Laura found the new addition at a local rescue specifically for their favorite type of pup. She wanted a dog who could actually keep up with Gypsy.
