Video: Owner Shares What a ‘First-Time Golden Retriever Owner’ Needs To Be Ready For

When most people think of Golden Retrievers, they picture glossy coats, wagging tails, and the perfect family dog running across a field. However, what often gets left out are the less glamorous (and sometimes hilarious) quirks that come with the breed. From dramatic glares to unexpected sneezes, these dogs keep their humans guessing every single day. Recently, one owner broke down the everyday realities of life with her Golden Retriever in a video that has dog parents laughing and nodding in agreement.

Owner shares what a ‘first-time Golden Retriever owner’ can expect in video

Macee Fay, dog mom to a Golden Retriever named Cash, posted a lighthearted Instagram video to give a glimpse of what first-time Golden parents should prepare for. Using short clips of her pup alongside playful captions, she ran through a list of traits that will feel very familiar to seasoned Golden Retriever families.

The video begins with a caption that reads, “1. Burps right in your face.” Viewers are then treated to several clips of Cash letting out burps while sitting close to Fay. It’s a comical yet relatable reminder that dogs don’t always have the best manners. The next caption highlights the breed’s expressive personality: “2. Strong side eye.” Cash is shown lounging around, giving his owner unmistakable side glances that perfectly capture his laid-back but sassy nature.

She also touches on their tendency to be “Velcro dogs.” Cash, like many others of his breed, follows her absolutely everywhere. Whether Fay is moving around the house, grabbing a snack, or just walking from room to room, the pup is always right on her heels.

Another interesting quirk she shows is Cash’s unique way of playing. He loves to grab toys and hold them high in the air like a trophy. To round off the list, Fay mentions their love of car rides, showing Cash gleefully sticking his head out of the window as the breeze runs through his fur.

The video quickly drew responses from other Golden Retriever owners, many of whom could relate to Fay’s list. One person commented, “This is all true.” Another added a missing quirk: “You forgot the goofy ways they fall asleep.” Someone else shared, “Mine doesn’t follow me, he backs up in front of me wherever I need to go.” Meanwhile, another suggested, “5. Sneezing in your face.”
