Amid the charred ruins of a neighborhood devastated by the Palisades fire, a moment of pure joy shone through the haze. An emotional video captures the heartfelt reunion of an owner and his beloved dog, Oreo, who he feared had been lost to the wildfire that claimed his home.
Dog and owner reunite in touching video amid raging LA blaze
Los Angeles resident Casey Colvin felt a wave of relief and emotion when he reunited with his dog, Oreo, five days after the devastating Palisades fire separated them. In a now-viral video, Colvin spots Oreo through a neighbor’s gate and rushes to scoop him up, exclaiming through tears, “Oh, honey! Oh my God, you’re alive! You’re alive!” as he holds the dog tightly.
The ordeal began when Colvin was at work and received evacuation orders due to the rapidly spreading fire. Caught in hours of gridlock traffic, he frantically worried about Oreo and another dog, Tika Tika Tika. Colvin recalled to NBC Los Angeles how he had rescued both dogs from the streets, and he felt desperate to save them from harm once more.
Although a firefighter managed to rescue Tika Tika Tika, Oreo fled into the neighborhood, leaving Colvin in distress. Even as his home lay in ashes, Colvin’s determination to find Oreo didn’t waver. He posted flyers online and used an AirTag placed on Oreo’s collar to track his whereabouts. His perseverance finally paid off when he received reports of Oreo being seen in the area, including a sighting of the dog “sleeping in the rubble of a neighbor’s home.”
Accompanied by a professional dog trapper, Colvin returned to the charred remains of his neighborhood. There, among the debris and ashes, he finally found Oreo. The reunion was an uplifting moment in a week of devastation, as Colvin carefully guided the frightened pup out of hiding and down the driveway to safety.
As of Monday morning, the Palisades and Eaton fires continue to rage, with at least 24 fatalities and nearly 200,000 people displaced, reported CNN. The fires have consumed over 40,000 acres and destroyed as many as 10,000 structures.
