Watch this Rescue Beagle Feel Grass for the First Time

Last month, the Human Society undertook a massive mission to rescue over 4,000 Beagles from a Virginia breeding facility. Sami, one of the rescue beagles, went into a foster home and got to feel grass for the very first time in her life.

Fostering a Rescue Beagle

Like all the other pups she was raised with, Sami spent the beginning of her life living in inhumane conditions. Deprived of healthy food, space to exercise, and the simple necessities of any happy dog, she suffered tremendously until the breeding facility was shut down.

Luckily, rescuers were able to find Sami a foster home until she could be permanently adopted. The Dodo reports that Karen Shrader and her family took in the tender pup, who was understandably unsure about the situation.

“The first day she was very timid, but she claimed a dog bed in our family room. She would only venture a few feet from the bed,” says Karen. But it didn’t take long for Sami’s curiosity to lead her to the backyard, where she got to feel grass for the first time in her life.

A video uploaded to Shrader’s Facebook page shows Sami’s ecstatic response to seeing the grass. It was an emotional moment for everyone. This wonderful pup who suffered needlessly finally gets to live the life she deserves.

An Ongoing Process

As of Aug. 25, the Humane Society has successfully rescued almost 3,000 Beagles located at the facility. The story of this monumental effort has received national attention, and even British royalty has heeded the call. In turn, dozens of shelters and rescue operations around the country have opened their doors to take in the rescues.

And what about Sami? Shrader says in just the short amount of time they’ve spent together, Sami has blossomed into a wonderful dog. Not surprisingly, the pair have bonded so intensely that Shrader has decided to keep Sami permanently. And with that, a happier ending for a rescue Beagle just isn’t possible.
