Masseuse for Dog Lands Dream Job at Beachfront Resort

People aren’t the only ones benefiting from massage therapy now. Apparently, luxury resorts are in the market for a doggie masseuse. If so, why leave your companion behind when hotels now cater to dog parents? Not surprisingly, a good massage can give your pet a whole host of health benefits from stress relief to increased circulation, and even an improved autoimmune response. But how do doggie masseuses work?

Doggie Masseuse on the Beach

Tammy Beachy is a certified dog massage therapist at Kona Kai Resort and Spa in San Diego. At the Kona Kai, massages are just one of the relaxing high-end spa treatments awaiting your pet. With 24 years of experience under her belt, Beachy says Kona Kai offered her an opportunity to bring her talents to a more … affectionate clientele. Recently, Beachy spoke to Skift about the ins and outs of the job. “I love being around dogs and getting to see them relax, close their eyes, wag their tails, and lean into me,” she said. With three lovely Chihuahuas of her own, Beachy knew this was the role for her.

However, one does not simply march into Kona Kai demanding to massage pooches. The resort requires intensive and thorough training in dog massage for all its certified dog massage therapists, and Beachy was no exception. “You have to give 50 dogs massages, explain who you worked with, where, and exactly what the experience was like,” said Beachy. The training program also includes research, tests, online readings, and multiple case studies.

It’s worth noting that Tammy’s massage room is also a little extraordinary. “I set up an outdoor cabana on the beach, with a pet bed on a blanket on the sand,” says Tammy “I have music playing, my lavender oil, and a chair in the cabana for the owner to sit on.” Sometimes the dogs lay down, sometimes not. But overall, Tammy makes sure they all leave refreshed and with wagging tails.

Luckily, the Kona Kai also offers massages for dog parents as well. As such, there’s nothing stopping you from booking a couple’s massage for you and your best friend. Your body will certainly thank you for taking some time off, and now your dog can too
