Some dogs seem to be bottomless pits when it comes to eating. This tendency is probably inherited from their ancestors whose food supply was not so regular. They had to gorge themselves whenever the opportunity presented itself. As a result, it's up you to regulate your dog's meals. How your dog is fed may be as important is what he is fed. Overfeeding your dog can lead to obesity which puts him at higher risk for many health problems. A good general rule is to give your dog a measured amount twice a day. The best doggy diet is low in fat and high in fiber. Good sources of protein are meat and eggs, as well as milk and cheese, though many dogs are sensitive to lactose products. Many premium dog foods offer the balanced nutrition that all dogs need so choose one that your pooch most enjoys. Puppies play hard and grow quickly. They require more nutrition than adult dogs. Puppies, less than a year old, need a diet rich in protein, calcium and iron for their growing bodies. They should be fed two to three times daily at consistent times. This is not only good for the puppy's health but will establish digestive patterns that aid in housetraining. Source: Adapted from the American Animal Hospital Association |
