So many dogs for adoption...how one person can help

According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), an estimated 6 to 8 million cats and dogs are taken in by shelters every year. Of those, 3 to 4 million are adopted while most of the others are put to sleep. There are many ways you can help improve the quality of life for the cats and dogs for adoption, even if you're not in a position to provide them with a permanent, loving home.

Adopt a cat or dog from a shelter
Foster a shelter pet
Donate money to a shelter
Donate your time to a shelter
Donate gently used pet supplies to a shelter
Spay or neuter your pet
Get the word out about the benefits of adopting shelter pets: Talk about it, blog about it, post it on Facebook, Tweet it!
Get the word out to your friends and family about foster care and adoption programs that offer special benefits for military members
