Some pups have to wait a very long time to find their forever homes. Such is the case of an abandoned Pit Bull with special needs in St. Louis, Missouri, who has been waiting almost a year to be adopted.
A Ruff Start for Abandoned Pit Bull
In February of 2022, a puppy now named Sanctuary was found in a box with two other Pit Bulls in an alleyway. St. Louis-based Stray Rescue took the puppies into its care. Upon examination, veterinarians discovered abrasions, injuries, and symptoms of neurological issues. After several weeks in residence at the shelter, the fur babies were transferred to foster homes. The other two pups were eventually adopted, but Sanctuary is still waiting for new parents.
Sanctuary has a neurological condition called cerebellar hypoplasia. It involves an underdeveloped cerebellum, which results in reduced mobility control. Essentially, the Pit Bull has difficulty walking and standing.
Special Needs Pup On the Move
Thanks to Walkin’ Pets, a company that specializes in equipment for pets with disabilities, Sanctuary has a wheelchair that has helped him become more mobile and independent.
“His wheelchair has made the biggest difference in his life. It has helped him physically, mentally, and emotionally. He can run, walk, eat, drink, and go to the bathroom on his own,” Clare, Sanctuary’s foster mom, said in a statement.
Physical therapy and socialization classes have also helped Sanctuary prepare for a forever home.
The pup is described by People as a “loveable, talented” and “friendly” dog.
“Sanctuary is sweet, smart, and silly. He loves his lamb chop toys and holding a ball in his mouth while running in the backyard in his wheelchair,” Clare said.
