Dog Survives, Unscathed, After Falling 170 Feet At The Red River Gorge

Dubbed by local authorities as a “doggone miracle,” a Pit Bull-Boxer mix, Tyson, somehow survived falling from a 170-foot cliff within the Red River Gorge unscathed.

Tyler Stinson, Tyson’s hiking buddy, was exploring Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest within the Red River Gorge this past Sunday. That’s when disaster struck.

According to Stinson’s report with WLEX 18, Tyson bolted for a lizard after being taken off-leash.

Surely knowing the area better than Tyson, the reptile took off along the top of the Indian Staircase and vanished — just before Tyson slid right off the edge of the cliff in pursuit.

“He kind of flipped himself backward, tumbled twice, and then I saw him roll off the edge,” described Stinson, who watched helplessly as his closest friend disappeared.

An Unhopeful Hunt for Tyson’s Body Proves Miraculous

Stinson called 911, and the Wolfe County Search & Rescue Team was dispatched to the scene.

Hoping only to find the body of Tyson for his human, the team came across a group of hikers who reported having seen an unleashed dog. They even took a picture.

Upon seeing the picture, Stinson confirmed that it was Tyson, blowing everyone’s minds.

“Adrenaline was running through my body, and the only thing I could think about was, ‘Holy crap, he’s alive,’” Stinson told WLEX.

Miracle Dog Of The Red River Gorge

Soon after the realization that Tyson was alive, the rescue team was able to locate him.

“The minute I saw him, I just folded onto him,” said Stinson. “That dog is my everything.”

Veterinarians thoroughly checked Tyson after the team recovered him, but they didn’t find any internal damage. He only had a few minor scratches but was an otherwise completely healthy Pit Bull.

Wolfe County Search & Rescue shared the story on their Facebook page, saying, “How Tyson survived 170′ fall is nothing short of miraculous and he was basically unhurt. This has certainly been a week of miracles in the Red River Gorge.”

The “week of miracles” refers to a four-year-old boy who survived a 70-foot fall in the gorge earlier the same week.

Apparently, there’s something mighty potent in the waters of the Red River Gorge. Be that as it may, Stinson says he will think twice before taking his beloved friend off-leash next time.
