Tuffy’s Pet Foods Is Second Dog Food Recalled This Month Due To Elevated Vitamin D Levels

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued yet another dog food recall today, making it the second one in the past month. This recall is also for the same issue as the previous recall — elevated levels of vitamin D, which can be quite hazardous for our pups.

Fromm Family Foods issued a recall earlier this month for elevated vitamin D levels. Today it’s Tuffy’s Pet Foods, citing the same issue.

In total, the company is recalling 1,600 cases of Pure Vita Salmon Entrée Dog Food. The FDA has shared the notice far and wide.

Which Tuffy’s Pet Food Products Are Recalled?

In order to identify if you have this recalled dog food in your home, the FDA advises to look for cans with the lot code “0629101N1” with a best-by date of “29 Jun 2023,” or the lot code “0901101N1” with a best-by date of “1 Sep 2023.”

If you no longer have the cans and want to inquire with your grocer, you can reference that the dog food came in a Tetrapack carton with the UPC “0 73893 96292 1.”

These cases were distributed across the entire United States. If you have the cans noted above, you can return them to the store you purchased them from for a full refund.

Tuffy’s recall notice states that if you have this dog food in your home to stop feeding your dogs with it “immediately,” contact your veterinarian, and provide specific details about the recall.

How Is Vitamin D Harmful To Dogs?

While Tuffy’s states that they’ve had no reports of illness, the risk is too high for safety.

Exposure to levels of Vitamin D that exceed approved FDA guidelines can cause many issues in dogs, including:

  • Renal dysfunction
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Excessive drooling.

If you see any of these symptoms in your dog, then you should contact your veterinarian right away.
