Early today, firefighters aided in evacuating people and dogs from a popular doggy daycare in Birmingham, Alabama.
Both workers and pups at Dog Days started showing signs of illness after a building-wide floor treatment.
Fumes Cause Breathing Trouble
According to The Washington Post, two of the workers appeared to be having breathing difficulties due to the strong smell of polyurethane. One of those workers fell unconscious upon the arrival of first responders.
As for the dogs, smaller pups made their way out the front door. Bigger pups, whose designated area is on the second floor of the building, occupied a play space on the roof until their rescue. From there, Birmingham Fire and Rescue used ladders to carry the dogs down. After they exited the building, five dogs went to the vet for a checkup as a precaution.
Jay Barrett, a spokesperson for Dog Days, says all people and pups are just fine.
Polyurethane and Dogs
Polyurethane is commonly used in paints, glues, and spray foam insulation. Some dogs, if left unattended around a home improvement project, will eat these products.
According to the ASPCA, polyurethane contains isocyanates, which expand in the stomach after consumption. If your dog eats polyurethane, they will need to go the vet immediately to remove their stomach contents.
While ingesting polyurethane is a no-go, smelling polyurethane from the application of paint or glue has similar effects on your dog as it does to you. Just as you may feel lightheaded or nauseas, your pup might also experience the same symptoms. If you plan on using products containing polyurethane in a home project, be sure that your dog isn’t around.
