Shelter Dog Whose World Is Reduced to a Kennel Deserves a Forever Home

Not every shelter pup greets visitors with wagging tails and excited barks. Some, like Joy, respond to heartbreak by becoming quieter with each passing day. A touching video shared by a shelter volunteer shows the 3-year-old dog waiting by her kennel door after losing the only home she had ever known.

Surrendered shelter dog now waits for new home and family

The video was posted on Instagram by Maria, who shares stories of adoptable shelter dogs through the account @helpingforgottenpaws. The clip introduces viewers to Joy, a 3-year-old canine whose life changed dramatically after her owner became homeless and could no longer care for her.

According to the text shown throughout the video, Joy has struggled ever since arriving at the shelter. Rather than exploring her surroundings, she spends much of her time sitting quietly in the same corner of her kennel.

Maria is seen gently petting Joy and trying to comfort her, offering the affection and reassurance the nervous dog appears to need. Still, the shelter environment seems to weigh heavily on her.

The video explains that even when Joy is taken outside her kennel, she ignores treats and instead waits by every door she sees, seemingly hoping one of them will “lead her home.” Another message in the video reads, “She’s absolutely terrified of this place,” noting just how difficult the adjustment has been.

In the caption accompanying the post, Maria shared more of Joy’s story. She explained that Joy arrived at the shelter 100 days ago after losing the only home she had ever known. Since then, she wrote, the dog’s “world has been reduced to a kennel she simply can’t adjust to.”

Joy is currently being cared for at Leavenworth Animal Control, where volunteers hope someone will look beyond her fearful demeanor. After losing everything, they believe what she needs most now is a family willing to give her a second chance.
