Dog Successfully Rescued From 12-Foot Deep Backyard Sinkhole in Falmouth

First responders in Falmouth, Massachusetts, worked for over two hours on Tuesday to pull a dog from a deep backyard sinkhole. Tessie is a yellow Labrador, and she was just out in the grass like usual, but things changed fast. Her brother, Taco, came back to the house alone, and he was frenziedly barking at the fence. He led their owner, David Velesig, right to a small opening in the dirt, where Velesig looked down and saw his pet at the bottom of a 12-foot drop. In the blink of an eye, a normal afternoon became a massive rescue mission.

David Velesig saw some leaves at the spot and a tiny opening at first. However, the hole was actually huge underneath, and he was worried about the ground caving in if he tried to help. So, he called 911 instead, and the fire department showed up and realized it was a serious situation. They had to stabilize the area before anyone could move. Velesig told WBZ that “two people became four people became eight people, became two dozen people.”

Everyone was just trying to help the dog. They brought in a ladder truck for the rescue, and they lowered a special harness down into the dark. It wasn’t an easy task at all since it took a long time to get the gear under her, but they finally rescued her from the sinkhole. Tessie was just waiting for her heroes. It is actually amazing how the whole community stepped up for a pet.

Hidden water drainage issues caused the whole mess. Crews had to fill the hole back in right away so it stays safe. Tessie is totally fine and didn’t even have a scratch. She even got some pepperoni to help her calm down.

Velesig mentioned to the news outlet that pets are just part of the family, and people do what they have to do to keep them safe: “They’re part of your family. You do what you’ve got to do.” It is just really great that Taco could raise the alarm and get the right help for his sister.
