Melanie Joy, who shares her life with four boys at @the3retrievers, recently posted proof that Gus has a serious need for speed. This Golden Retriever has decided his true calling is being a jet ski driver, and he doesn’t care if the engine is off. The resulting video is a hilarious masterclass in canine stubbornness when the fun ends way too soon.

The video starts just as the Golden Retriever and his dad return to the dock. You would assume the ride is over, but Gus clearly didn’t hear the bell. His dad literally has to use the handle on the pup’s life jacket to lift and shift him off the main seat.
It’s completely useless. The second his paws hit the footwells, Gus hobbles right back up onto his throne. His dad’s exhausted laugh in the background suggests this is definitely not the first time they’ve had this argument.
Even when his dad gives up and walks onto the jetty, Gus just sits there, bobbing on the water and waiting for the next departure. He keeps a close eye on his human from the seat, hoping for a change of heart.
The dog dad eventually has to haul the hefty Golden Retriever onto the dock, earning a look of total disgust from Gus. He then shakes off the lake water and prepares for his next sneaky move.
But the best part is the end. Gus seems to accept defeat, only to immediately turn around, lead the group back to the water, and hop onto the ski completely unassisted. He basically tells his dad, “Fine, I’ll drive myself.” He even stays on the seat to lick the handles, clearly wishing he could drive this thing and take it out for a solo spin.
